Vegan Food and Living
At Ecotricity, our mission to end the use of fossil fuels is part of our wider vision for a zero carbon Britain. Since we became the world鈥檚 first green energy company in 1995, we鈥檝e been giving people a real alternative in the form of ethical green energy.
Did you know a lot of the energy supplied to our homes is not vegan? The factory farming of animals is a huge contributor to global carbon emissions and some energy suppliers use animal by-products to generate both electricity and gas. This is wrong, both in terms of climate and animal welfare. That鈥檚 why we鈥檙e the only energy supplier to be certified as vegan 鈥 by both The Vegan Society and Viva!, the vegan charity.
Vegan energy is energy produced without involving animals. Solar and wind power produce green electricity without using animals but gas can be more problematic.
Anaerobic digestion of green matter 鈥 certified by The Vegan Society and Viva! 鈥 is a genuinely green, vegan way to make biogas. This can be used to create electricity or further treated to make biomethane, which can be used as household gas. It鈥檚 what we鈥檙e doing in our new green gasmills.
